The Right Way to Curl for Real Strength Gains
Most lifters think of bicep curls as a vanity move, but done right, they build real strength that carries over to your main lifts.
Most lifters treat bicep curls like an afterthought, but when done correctly, they can actually make you stronger in your bench, deadlift, and even your squat.
Bicep curls train more than just the show muscles. They strengthen the elbow flexors and help protect your joints during heavy pulling movements. If you’ve ever felt your arms give out during rows or deadlifts, weak biceps might be part of the problem.
But the way you curl matters. Keep your elbows close to your sides, control each rep, and avoid using momentum. Focus on the contraction at the top and the slow lowering phase—that’s where most of the strength gains happen.
You can vary your grip to target different parts of the arm, but the key is consistency and control. Strength comes from training small muscles with the same intent you bring to the big lifts.
