Why Some Lifters Deadlift in Squat Shoes (And Why Most Shouldn’t)
Many lifters wonder if they can deadlift in squat shoes. Learn how heel height changes your setup, balance, and leverage, and find out which shoes actually help you pull more weight safely and efficiently.
Many lifters ask whether they can deadlift in squat shoes. If you already own a stable pair of lifting shoes for squats, it might seem practical to use them for deadlifts too. The problem is that squat shoes are built for a different movement pattern. Their raised heel can make the lift harder, change your setup, and reduce how much weight you can pull.
The short version? “You should usually not deadlift in squat shoes because they have an elevated heel. This raised heel is 0.75-1.5 inches, which makes the lift harder as you'll need to pull the barbell this extra distance. Also, a raised heel places greater loading demand on the knee extensors rather than your posterior chain.”
